2016 honored Janice Coon past Utah Cowbelle president 1979-1980. Her granddaughter wrote this tribute:
Janice Coon served in the Cowbells throughout the 1970s, first in her county position in Tooele, then as the statewide president from 1978-80.
(Written as if her daughter Shelley is sharing this)
Mom kept a big cowbell at our house that she used during the cowbell meetings. We kids also helped with some of the events she was over. One of these events was a fundraiser where cattlemen would pay to have their brands printed on napkins and Mom would deliver them all over the state to places such as Altamont, Aurora, Myton, and Birds Eye – this was the first time we kids had ever heard of these towns.
She spent time delivering educational materials all over the state, including posters about beef cuts to Home Economics classrooms in high schools, beef pamphlets to grocery stores, and bumper stickers (which she also put on the family car). She used her daughters as secretaries to type things up on the typewriter for several Cowbell meetings and functions.
Mom attended summer and winter conventions, as that was when her children had time off from school. For one of those conventions, she organized a quilt raffle. She had made a quilt with cattle brands from all over the state and raffled it off. She also participated in the Beef Cookoff.
She had great friends through the Cowbells, including Zella Clegg from Tooele and Sheila Sorenson from Axtell.
They lived in Erda, Annabell and now Tooele at assisted living.
Janice and Evan have Seven kids: Cindy, Glade, Shelley, Joan, Paula, Joe & Terrie;
24 Grandkids and 14 Great Grandkids.
I know she mentioned to me (Beth Anderson) that she liked it better when it was "Utah Cowbelles" instead of "Utah CattleWomen".
